Guided Reading the 4-Blocks Way

We read between 1-3 books a week. We concentrate on comprehension strategies like connecting to the text, questioning, cause and effect, problem and solution, summarizing, and predicting. Teacher goes over a short mini-lesson before we read the book and also sets the purpose for our reading. As we read, we try to look for the answers to her questions so we can participate in a discussion afterwards or complete a response activity.

We use several different strategies and groupings. We spend a lot of time in shared reading, echo reading and choral reading in the beginning of the year. We start to read with partners and by ourselves as the year goes on. By second semester, we form book clubs and meet in groups that read different books for the week on a single theme. We also start using the "3-ring Circus" grouping where some of us read alone, some read with teacher and some read with partners.

After reading the book, Ice Cream by Joy Cowley, we brainstormed several summaries of the text.

Don't eat too much ice cream. We like ice cream anywhere.
