The Fruit of the Spirit:

A Study of Virtues

(This unit has been 4MATted)

"And the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control." Galations 5:22-23

Lessons

Day 1:

Connect: Play the game Fruit-basket-upset. Choose 4-5 fruits and assign one to each student. Place chairs in a circle (one less than there are students) and have the odd-man-out stand in the middle. When you call out the name of a fruit or fruits, those students must switch chairs. "It" must try to find an empty seat during the switch. The person left without a chair becomes it and can call out the name/names of fruits. Play for several rounds. (Emphasis on polite play; no shoving or pushing)

Attend: Discuss with the class how it felt when they were it. How did it feel when their fruit was called and they had to switch chairs? Talk about how some may have gotten a bit rough, but for the most part, everyone was a good sport.

Imagine: Have students imagine they are a fruit tree/bush. What kind of fruit are they and why? Do a Cooperative Learning Structure: Think-Pair-Share or Stand-up-hand-up-Pair-up.

Inform: There are fruits in the bible. In fact, there are some special "fruits" called the fruits of the spirit. (Play the song found in the resources and begin learning it.)
