Guided Math

I love spending time with small groups during math time.

I have done this several different ways.

I have ability grouped the class after pretests.

I have taken quick understanding checks after a lesson (thumbs up-I've got it! / thumbs down-I need more help. / thumbs in middle-I'll try it, but might need help.)

I will try to explain some of my management systems.

*divide class into groups and rotate between activities and teacher. I had 4 groups (a low group, med-low, med-high, and high). I met with the two on-level groups together to start while the other two groups were at an activity. Next, I met with my group that needs more teacher support for 2 rotations--often working through the worksheet with them. Last, I met with my independent group, who already did their lesson together and filled out their worksheet. When they came to me, I looked over the worksheets and did a challenge activity with them.

This year I will be structuring my guided math after Debbie Diller's Math Work Stations book. I will have two students in a group, 10-11 stations. We will start with calendar time and a quick whole group mini-lesson. Then we will do two stations and come back for share time.

Limited Time: Stenhouse has Debbie's book available to read online: http://www.stenhouse.com/emags/0793/pageflip.html

I also found an awesome site with lots of resources for math stations as well as a very well done assessment piece: http://www.k-5mathteachingresources.com/ECAM.html
